Resveratrol and Heart Health
Heart disease: Resveratrol is thought to help reduce inflammation, lower LDL or “bad” cholesterol, and make it more difficult for clots to form that can lead to a heart attack.
Cardiovascular Benefits
In laboratories around the world, innovative studies identified the impact of resveratrol on reducing the risks of heart disease and the damage from strokes.20 Some of these discoveries include the reduction of atherosclerosis, including control of blood vessel diameter and muscle tone, inhibition of oxidative stress, anti-inflammatory effects, inhibition of LDL (low-density lipoprotein) oxidation, and a reduced “stickiness” of platelets leading to a reduction in deadly clot formation.21-25
Inflammation: Resveratrol has been shown to activate a protein that protects against oxidative damage caused by inflammation, and other research has shown that the antioxidant properties of resveratrol resulted in a decrease of LDL oxidation (this is a process that contributes to the formation of plaque).[*][*] Resveratrol was also found to be an effective scavenger of damaging free radicals, helping decrease inflammation by doing so.[*][*]
As an anti-atherogenic agent, it has the ability to reduce plaque formation in the arteries. Researchers further suggest that resveratrol could attenuate Trimethylamine-N-Oxide (TMAO)-Induced atherosclerosis. It does so by regulating the synthesis of TMAO as well as bile acid metabolism through making changes in the gut microbiota.
